I got a double dose of hiking last Saturday, with a stop at Vassar Farm shortly after my hike at Peach Hill Park. Between Vassar Lake on Raymond Avenue and the front pond area of Vassar Farm, I spotted a total of six common mergansers.
February also marks the return of several species to the area, according to the Waterman Bird Club. Red-winged blackbirds, grackles, killdeer and turkey vultures all come back to Dutchess County, and Vassar Farm is a great place to find them all. Unfortunately, I only crossed paths with a few turkey vultures. Gotta keep looking!
