08/07/10 – Montgomery Place & Poet’s Walk Park

Had a busy day in Dutchess County today!  After breakfast at Pete’s Famous in Hyde Park, we drove out past Rhinebeck to Montgomery Place.  It was one of the few historic mansions I have not been to around here.  They had a couple of walking trails and a garden to explore.  There were a bunch of different butterfly species at the gardens, but little else to mention.

Then we stopped at Poet’s Walk Park right down the road for a little additional walking.

There were quite a few Indigo Buntings singing, but only one sighting.  In the wooded area, we got to observe two Pileated Woodpeckers for quite some time.  At one point, a good sized branch came crashing down about 50 feet from the trail because of one of them!  There were also 8 Double-Crested Cormorants seen flying south over the Hudson River.  I wasn’t able to get any good wildlife photos, so I just took a couple of landscape shots and called it a day.  Should probably have a few up tomorrow.
