Green Heron Catching Fish

It’s very rare that I have a front row seat to photograph natural behavior of birds for an extended period of time.  Last Friday at Vassar Farm, I was able to remain partly hidden behind a bush to watch this green heron catching fish.

For several minutes, the heron stalked fish in the pond, catching two before being chased off by another green heron.  The heron would jump head first into the water and fly back up to his fishing perch, food in beak.  The best part was that I captured the entire sequence, to share with everyone here!  Enjoy!  🙂

This is thrilling! Makes me feel like I’m there. Looks like the heron is diving right over a turtle … a red-eared slider, maybe?

Its possible it was a slider, I’ve seen them in this spot before. Thank you for visiting my blog, I combed through yours as well and thoroughly enjoyed the photos!
