New Insect Photographed – Praying Mantis

Praying Mantis

Today, I found a needle in a haystack – the needle being a praying mantis and the haystack being Peach Hill Park in Poughkeepsie.

I was examining shrubs and flowers for new types of skippers to photograph for my collection when I saw unusual moment in a shrub near the parking lot.  I would have never guessed it would be my first praying mantis sighting ever.

I literally had to lay on the ground to get my initial photos, but as I watched him walk from leaf to leaf, he eventually came out into the open, which is when I went to town.  In the blink of an eye, he jumped further into the shrub, and I lost him.  Simply amazing!
