Wildlife Photos from 09/03/12 – Saugerties

Wood Thrush

The day started out well in Saugerties, but cloudy skies reigned supreme for a majority of the time we were out.  It’s not the most ideal photography setting in the world, but I gave it my best attempt.

A majority of the shots came from the Esopus Bend Nature Preserve, where I came in contact with several mixed flocks of birds.  The biggest shock though came towards the end of the day, when I witnessed the darker side of nature – a black rat snake struck, constricted and killed a chipmunk.  It then began to swallow the chipmunk whole, maybe 15 feet away from the trail.  I’ve never seen that in the outdoors before, only on television.

For photos of that situation and everything else from the day, check out the photo gallery.
