In a big open area like the Shawangunk Grasslands, it can be quite difficult to get decent photographs of the wildlife. I had a lot of little sparrow sized birds fly by as I hiked along the trails, but never really got an opportunity to photograph them.
And while I did get some okay photos of some northern harriers, most of my shots were insects and butterflies. I was happy to see so many buckeyes around, as they are one of our more visually stunning butterflies.
I will have to make a note to myself to try and make a visit or two here in the winter for a chance to see and photograph any short-eared owls that spend the winter there. Until then, enjoy these current photos.
