New Butterfly Photographed – Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Dark Phase)

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Dark Phase)

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail (Dark Phase)

While spending some time at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Historic Site, I stopped by the gardens to look for butterflies.

There were lots of silver-spotted skippers and eastern tiger swallowtails around… and then there was this one.  I thought it was a spicebush swallowtail at first, but when the sunlight hit it just right, it would change color to yellow.

It turned out to a dark phase eastern tiger swallowtail!  It’s not a new species, technically… but an interesting variation nonetheless!
